mess of a story with thinly veiled copies of characters from the Marvel Universe and some opposite sex versions of DCU characters By far the best part of this story arc not counting Ed McGuinness s larger than life art the sublime colour work of Dave McCaig is Batzarro, most simply described as a Bizarro Batman, whose interior monologues are word for word copies of his actual spoken lines So, yeah big characters, big brawls, reality hops, Batzarro That s about it If you just go along for the ride and can keep things kinda straight story wise, you might like this book at least a little bit It s like Loeb just threw in a lot of his cool ideas though, to be fair, there are a few gems in this one without considering the age of his audience One of the worst comics I ve read in a while, confusing, anti climatic, batzaro what the hell Here is another reminder that if you want to tell a story, keep it simple and logical enough to follow In this latest volume of the Superman and Batman adventure, super villains from parallel worlds hunt the superheroes to avenge the murder of a colleague Simultaneously, the duo seem to be out looking for who murdered Lois Lane, and all involved in to other versions of Batman and Superman which makes for a big mess and a headache for not only Superman and Batman but for the readers as well Sitting on the sidelines and using the situation for entertainment purposes are the Joker, Mxyzptlk, and Bat mite These involvement of thees three super villains as well as Bizarro and Batzarro manage to help get any reader to the end of the graphic novel Thank God for comic relief Superman Batman Vengeance may be he fourth volume in the series, but the story is easily self contained, kind of My monthly Comic Bento box brought me volume 4 and I hadn t read any of the other installments yet, so I was a little apprehensive Beyond some vague Darksied event that I hadn t read, nothing really necessitated any background knowledge to get the main Darksied event that I hadn t read, nothing really necessitated any background knowledge to get the main story We open with Superman and Batman in an alternate universe fighting the Maximums After killing one of the Maximums, Superman and Batman head back to their own dimension, leaving the Maximums seeking revenge From here, Jeph Loeb embraces the multiverse of DC and has a stream of heroes and villains from other universes filter in This includes Bizarro and Batzarro, who try to help Batman and Superman They are fun characters that can bring some comic relief, but their weird reverse speak in confusing, mainly because not everything is opposite, but you get kind of used to it As with any multiverse story, Vengeance is convoluted and often confusing I still enjoyed the story, but it wasn t entirely clear what was happening some of the time While the story was pretty solid, the art left some to be desired, mainly in the artwork for Superman and Batman they both look like relatives of The Crimson Chin from Fairly Odd Parents They have strangely elongated chins with bizarre clefts They look really blocky and angular, especially when other characters look so normal Everyone looks to bulky and muscular and has these big anime eyes and most of them do have cleft chins, but Batman and Superman look so bad that I almost didn t notice their terrible take on how The Joker should look Darksied looks fine, but everyone else has some weird caricature like feature that just throws it off The art isn t terrible and overly distracting like Dark Knight returns, but it wasn t good Vengeance was a decent story that had good pacing and I didn t feel like I was missing too much buy jumping in at volume 4, but the sub par art and confusing story which seems to be the trademark of a multiverse story were big negatives Don t get me wrong Jeph Loeb, chief writer on DC s terrific Superman Batman series, has done outstanding work with these two players the rock solid foundation of the DC Universe but VENGEANCE by its bitter anticlimax feels very much like a conglomeration of ideas instead of one masterful story from start to finish Loeb begins with a Super opening appreciate what happens here and kill a superhero called Skyscraper who presumably murdered Lois Lane incensed and out for vengeance, the Maximums this world s Justice League vow to hunt the Man of Steel and the World s Greatest Detective to the ends of whatever universe they inhabit in order to have their revenge and right there at least for me is where this story FELT like it wasn t going to be quite right superheroes represent the best any world has to offer, and these Maximums want vengeance They want blood They want to kill Batman and Superman for taking one of their comrades away Honestly, right there, I was wondering if this was a tale for me Not too many pages later, I m struggling to get through the mental and verbal gibberish of not only Bizarro but Batzarro, and I m thinking, Geez, Jeph Loeb really needs some time off VENGEANCE isn t a total loss Loeb s a great writer with a fantastic imagination and an uncanny ability to seal himself inside the minds of these two superheroes to show the reader what makes them tick, and only from his learned hands can you find so many wonderful moments in an otherwise forgettable story There s not only two worlds at play here there are, quite possibly, dozens, as Supermen, Batmen, Supergirls, Batboys, and the like show up from earnest supporting appearances Granted, it may not make a whole lot of sense, but even THAT makes sense once you find out which dastardly villains are behind this whole world hopping, mind blowing affair Yes, it s worth a read, and, yes, it s arguably worth forgetting Remember the little moments along the way, and keep your fingers crossed for Loeb to appear in top form again real, real soon the worst jeph loeb s ive read which is not that bad because all the other ones were god tier. .E-PUB ⚇ Superman/Batman (Volume 4): Vengeance ☸ The original superstar team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness return for one of the most talked about storylines of the year The fourth volume of the enormously popular SUPERMAN BATMAN series finds our heroes confronting a new challenge The Maximums, a group of super heroes closely tied to the US Government Someone has killed one of their team, and the Maximums are on the hunt for the murderer The trouble is, there are two names on the top of their list Superman and Batman This arc is a zany romp through some crazy ideas It is Superman and Batman vs the Avengers but a super awesome DC redesign of the Avengers combined with an alternate universe cavalcade of else world Batmen and Supermen If that sounds like a lot is going on you re not wrong The arc starts with an evil Superman and Batman jumping through a BoomTube into the world of the Maximums this, hilariously is never explained The Maximums are an Avengers tribute There is through alternate universes, visiting different reimaginings of Superman and Batman I won t spoil the reveal of who s manipulating the whole thing, but with a zany adventure like this, there really isn t any other way it could have gone. The art is cartoony and complements the story perfectly It really feels like Loeb and McGuinness had a lot of fun working on this story, as it is a lot of fun to read McGuinness takes the Avengers and turns them up to 11 Loeb s pacing and dialog are laugh out loud funny at times. This is not a serious Superman Batman story, it s just for fun If you re familiar with Superman and Batman from different cartoons and such, I recommend it If your looking for your superheroes to explore humanity, develop characters, and use metaphors to hold up a mirror to the common man this is probably not the book for you I am reading such a complex and at the same time interesting story arc involving the two major characters of the DC Universe after such a long time I their childishness and downright stupidity In the end, it is their bravado which ensures that the universe s balance is not distorted, rather it remains preserved We also get to see the level of subtlety that the Man of Steel has started to lack in the corresponding executions of his immense power Batman as always comes about to help him from time to time. The composite Batman Superman although ingenious was apparently sore to the eyes of the reader To me it was Ed McGuinness is the king of creating the artwork that confers upon the heroes that bulky, muscular and attention grabbing attention and characteristics.Overall, a pulsating story that showcases the diversity that DC comics is able to provide The fourth volume of the Superman Batman series takes readers on a twisted tour Batman Beyond, the gender swapped Earth, Batmen and Supermen from the multiverse, and a final battle between Composite Superman and the so called Maximum Maximum When the dust settles, it is revealed that the entire story was a game between Mister Mxyzptlk and the Joker Jeph Loeb s hodgepodge of a story fails to justify its existence It feels as if Loeb was attempting to cram in as much merchandising as possible for future action figure sales The art from Ed McGuinness is what gives this volume any saving grace, as his distinctive design at least provides the lackluster story with loads of eye candy With such a convoluted plot, readers should be seeking Vengeance on Loeb for this disaster
