the kitchen We follow Yue as he explores Beijing, watching others and learning through imitation, until he finally leaves for the West This beautifully written and evocative memoir highlights how, despite poverty and repressed times, cooking family dishes was a life affirming experience, symbolising freedom of expression He shares with readers a few delicious traditional recipes which have been passed on in his family and among friends These are based on a few simple ingredients, a natural approach to taste, colour and texture, and an innate love of good food This memoir of growing up in 1960 s Communist China is structured around the author s experiences with food and music His family s musical talents allowed them some relief from the worst restrictions of the Cultural Revolution, sharp details of the kinds of foods available and the family s traditions for preparing and eating their meals.I found it interesting to learn the perspective of a person who knew very little of the world outside the Communist totaliarian society Incidents that, to an American, seem to be unbearable assaults on freedom were just part of normal everyday life to him. What I enjoyed most about the book was his ability to bring all senses into focus His food descriptions were not limited to taste He included aroma, texture, temperature, colors, shapes, and the various sounds he heard when his mother and older sisters, and later the author, were cooking The title fits this story of abundant love for his family, their music, and their ability to make the best of their food even in times of scarcity Excellent Whatdo you need Music, food and love and recipes Wonderful written, I could smell the food A Memoirs of a Chinese child, growing up in a musical family during the cultural the bamboo flute, Yue eventually becomes an army musician whose sole aim should be to entertain soldiers, to keep their spirits high and their belief in communism intact The depictions of life in the People s Republic were so interesting and it was somewhat shocking to me that much of this occurred in recent history there s my world history view gap again Yue lived near Tiananmen Square and describes huge displays of marching soldiers and musical performances, with the participants all dressed alike His mother is sent to the country to work in the fields for several years for the crime of being educated As the Red Guard destroys many cultural items, they also control all aspects of Chinese life and Mao s Little Red Book is mandatory reading.Although food is severely rationed, its preparation and consumption cannot be controlled, and herein lies salvation for many and the joys of this book Virtually every aspect of life, events both celebratory and mundane, memories of family and friends are all triggers for wonderful descriptions of food Upon waking, the watchword was What shall we eat today , and pleasant hours are spent choosing, preparing and eating meals, and in meeting the challenge of how to make something different with the same ingredients each day A third of the book is devoted to recipes which are as fun to read as the rest of the story In the comments of one recipe, Yue writes The success of this dish will depend on your careful preparation What a satisfying book
