Mmmm I cannot put my finger on exactly why I did not love this book It was a good story with a heart stopping bit in the middle It just felt a bit flat and drawn out I didn t love the characters apart from little Charlotte who is so cute I did struggle at times to pick it up but managed to get to the end which was a bit of an anti climax too. of a novel from Karen Aldous I ve devoured and loved each of Karen s previous books, having adored how easily I was whisked away to some sun drenched part of France, where I would have happily remained for the foreseeable future The author writes so beautifully, peppering her prose with delectable descriptions, it s incredibly easy to lose track of the time slipping by, and this was no different in Karen s latest book One Moment at Sunrise. From the moment the cover of this book was revealed over on Twitter, I just couldn t wait to read it, and once I d raced through the blurb, I wanted to do so immediately One thing I ve picked up on while reading Karen s previous novels is the heart warming focus on family and relationships, and also on motherhood Karen takes the most important things in life and incorporates them seamlessly within her stories, making them feel all thereal and genuine, and that was most definitely the case in One Moment at Sunrise Within Karen s latest novel, we re introduced to Evie Grant Now Evie, to me, felt like a very strong and determined woman, if only she had the chance to use that strength and determination As Karen began to build up Evie s history, alongside Evie s daughter Charlotte, it quickly became clear that this was very much a bird trapped in cage situation, and this is a situation that I cannot stand to see, in real life as well as in fiction Evie s life was very restricted Yes, she lived in a beautiful home in a beautiful area but sometimes in life, beautiful things just aren t enough Evie s partner, Seb Wilde, was a man who very rarely stuck around Living a glamorous lifestyle, always on the move, and preferring champagne and yachts to his home, partner and daughter, I very quickly got the impression that Evie was a kept woman She had little independence, few friends, and was the main carer of their daughter, although a daughter who Evie clearly ADORED, and would have done absolutely anything for The characters were brilliantly built up, in my mind as well as on the page, and so I felt like I knew them pretty well before the story truly begun, which was a bonus in itself.Karen really kicks Evie s story off in the very first chapter After a heart racing, near miss while riding her bike along the Canal Du Midi, Evie finds herself being rescued by Ben, a brown eyed producer who, without her realising, begins to shape her future Alongside their chance meeting, Evie sets out on a surprising but nonetheless uplifting journey towards taking back the reigns of her life and being in control onceWeaved into this story of self discovery and the rebuilding of confidence was the rich unearthing of the past as Evie joins with Ben to research the creation of the Canal Du Midi itself, and the man behind the creation, Pierre Paul Riquet But, having knowledge already of the area, Evie is able to bring something muchriveting to Ben s production and quickly, the two of them become engrossed in the project. This was a fascinating story, but alongside the research, Evie had issues much closer to home to deal with too When things took a surprising turn later on in the plot, I couldn t race through the second half of the novel fast enough, and with Evie s daughter involved, it spoke high volumes of danger for both characters who I d quickly come to adore I was cheering for Evie right the way through, and I couldn t wait to see how Karen would bring Evie s story to an end I severely hoped that would all would be well, but in all honesty, I really couldn t say for sureAll in all, another gorgeous novel from Karen Aldous Set in a glorious location, with a fantastic collection of characters, I was utterly charmed by One Moment at Sunrise It was a novel of love, hope and finally, strength As I sit here and write this review, I find myself thinking of Evie and hoping that all is well in her world She definitely deserves it Becca s Books is awarding One Moment at Sunrise by situation, I feel like I never really got to know her I cannot put my finger on what held me back, but I finished the book feeling like something was missing The reality of Evie s situation is not a new concept, nor is the reaction to it by her family and friends There was nothing new or fresh about the idea, so the characters themselves needed to stand out One Moment at Sunrise was just an average read for me, as there was nothing particularly memorable about it.I would like to thank Carina UK and NetGalley for giving me an electronic copy, in exchange for an honest review Evie is family, friends and technology, Evie is completely hidden away from the outside world She is totally reliant on Seb for everything and has been led to believe that she simply would not be able to cope alone Evie s life starts to gradually change when a terrifying chance encounter results in her meeting handsome film producer, Ben, who offers her the chance to pursue her dream career and unwittingly leads Evie into taking a long, hard look at what her life has become She may have a beautiful daughter and live in an idyllic place, however she has had to sacrifice an awful lot to be where she is Was that sacrifice really worth it What will happen to them if Seb decides that Evie and Charlotte are becoming a burden to his very public lifestyle As a character, Evie is frustrating in both her naivity and her anxiety, however you can understand how she has been manipulated into developing such characteristics by the clever psychological abuse that she has suffered at the hands of the selfish and villainous Seb I thought she was a great protagonist and I found myself urging her along with each step she tentatively took towards self reliance The main supporting characters are all credible and very likeable Ben strong, kind and very handsome Suzanne the sympathetic neighbour and Evie s only friend and Cally Evie s estranged sister who wants to mend their relationship It was lovely to read how Evie s relationships with these three very different people grew and developed over the course of the book The story really is quite touching in that regard, giving particular focus to the equal importance of different relationships in Evie s life One of things I love most about Aldous books are the wonderful locations that she picks in France as the settings for her stories One Moment at Sunrise was particularly special to me as my parents have recently purchased a house in the Pyr n es Orientales, quite close to Capstang Beziers where the story is set I don t know much about the area, however I am keen to learn and Aldous provides a great history lesson regarding Pierre Paul Riquet and his involvement in the development of the Canal du Midi running through the region Quite how accurate that aspect of the story is, I don t know, however it certainly makes me keen to learn.I can honestly say, without a doubt, that One Moment at Sunrise has proven to be my favourite of Aldous books to date It has a depth to the story that captivated me I liked that it addressed some very serious issues whilst also being both a romance and a history lesson so much content, all wrapped up into one story One Moment at Sunrise is a plausible, touching and uplifting account of self discovery and independence A thought proviking and pleasurable read One Moment at Sunrise is Karen Aldous fourth novel and my favourite so far With depth, honesty and pure emotion, it tells the story of Evie, a woman so isolated and restricted from life, or maybefrom living life, that you can t help but will her into finding some freedom, bonding with the family she s lost contact with and most importantly of all, ditching the controlling Seb for good and making a life for herself and her daughter This is a beautiful tale of one woman s self discovery, One Moment at Sunrise is Karen Aldous fourth novel and my favourite so far With depth, honesty and pure emotion, it tells the story of Evie, a woman so isolated and restricted from life, or maybefrom living life, that you can t help but will her into finding some freedom, bonding with the family she s lost contact with and most importantly of all, ditching the controlling Seb for good and making a life for herself and her daughter This is a beautiful tale of one woman s self discovery, utterly convincing and compelling I was drawn into this book right away as the opening chapter sets the rest of the story up really well As soon as we meet Evie, we can see her frustration at life and how she keeps on being let down by her partner Another thing apparent right from the beginning is the lovely relationship she has with her daughter, Charlotte, who is approaching her second birthday Charlotte was such a sweet character, herself at the stage of trying to figure out the world with her mispronunciations and attachment to her mum and need for attention Evie s biggest strength in this book is always putting her daughter s needs first and because of that, she s an easy character to connect with and root for, which is something I think you really need for this particular story to keep your attention right to the end The supporting characters in One Moment at Sunrise were mostly lovely too My favourites were Evie s sister, Cally, and her neighbour, Suzanne Cally in particular I really enjoyed getting to know almost at the same time Evie got to know her too Another of my favourite characters was Ben, a film director who Evie meets in quite dramatic circumstances early on I loved seeing how their friendship grew and Karen wrote their connection really beautifully Throughout the book, we get to hear what Evie is thinking a lot which allows the reader to really get to know her as a character and see how her feelings and aspirations develop as she takes an interest in both Ben and the film he is directing We re also able to see glimpses of Ben s character, his feelings and motives and though he is definitely secondary to Evie in how much we hear from him, there s depth to his character and his interesting backstory Plus he was, as expected from one of Karen s novels, a bit of a hunk too Evie s research into the film Ben was directing added a different dimension to One Moment at Sunrise and I was surprised to find it really fascinating learning about the history which combined with Evie s imagination and take on the story became really vivid and engaging I loved how Evie really came out of her shell when researching for the film and through the character of Maria Mendoza, she almost began to discover and find the person she wanted to be, if she could escape from the claustrophobic hold Seb had over her Even though I had already expected to like this book having enjoyed everything by this author, I wasn t expecting to love is as much as I did, but I think it s Karen Aldous s best book to date The story is really riveting, very touching whilst at the same time providing a fair bit of drama which had me turning the pages really quickly to see how things would transpire The aspect I loved about One Moment at Sunrise the most was how empowering a story it was As Evie is trying to find herself in a world where her life has being controlled for so long, it s easy to understand and relate to her want for a better life for herself and the people she cares about Watching her take little steps to creating this better life for herself and her daughter is ultimately uplifting review copy 3.5 stars This is one of those books where I wished that I concerned that Evie is ok Ben and his crew are filming the life story of Pierre Paul Riquet, who built the Canal du Midi, and the challenges he had to overcome.Evie lives a lonely life, hidden away in the South of France with her young daughter, Charlotte Evie is estranged from her parents because of her relationship with the famous singer, Seb Wilde Evie and Seb do not have a normal relationship, it is clear from the outset that Seb has her hidden away to protect his career, his publicity isn t focused on being a family man however there isto this than meets the eye Seb, albeit never around, is very controlling of Evie she s not allowed a job, friends, modern technology such as a laptop, phone or internet or for people to know who he is Evie also has a distant relationship with her big sister Cally but she does come to visit providing Evie with some company, along with the friendship she has formed with her neighbour Suzanne.Evie gets involved with the Riquet production by researching the women that Ben has inadvertently left out of the story, she unearths some information which changes the scripts for the production and Ben is very grateful for her work This gives Evie a thirst for working and a littleindependence despite Seb prohibiting her from working Evie starts to see through the fairytale of Seb and wantsthan the half life that her and Charlotte are currently living. This is the first book I have read from this author however it is her fourth novel Initially I found it a little hard to get into because I was frustrated by how compliant and accepting of Seb s double life Evie is however it is clear that she is heavy manipulated by Seb to be this way There is a relaxed pace to this book, with the tension building up slowly and asis revealed, the story picks up pace The characters, other than Seb, are very likeable Ben is both charming and genuine and very handsome , Suzanne is loyal and protective of Evie and Charlotte, and Cally is trying to rebuild not only her relationship with Evie but also build bridges between Evie and their parents. One Moment at Sunrise is a light easy read, one that you will wish whisks you away to the south of
