I enjoyed this very much I m really happy to add author Dora Gonz lez to my fav authors The writing style captivated me from the beginning and had me hooked to the story The story is from multiple perspective in third person which I loved cuz it fitted perfectly with the story I loved the different POV s of characters I liked to know them all and how all of them added to the story line Edwin is the main character in this most of the time lol As I said earlier it has multiple POV s which made me feel everyone was main characters even the POV s from antagonist I don t mean the main villain but a character who can get on the good side So Edwin and Alden are the main characters but I enjoyed the POV s of their parents I liked that fact cuz I ve not read YA books from parent s POV which was new and great for me I liked Alden in beginning but by end I liked Edwin They were both nice I loved this book and am looking forward for the sequel and Dora s writing Got the book in exchange of an honest review. I was completely sucked in to this book There were so many surprises and revealed secrets I was really kept on my toes Why is Edwin s dad so determined to teach him how to fight, what is the queen up to, why is Edwin s mom sneaking around, who are the oracles and what are doing, and who is the man that controls the dark magic If you are paying attention you might catch the very small little hints for the biggest secret, but chances are you won t and there is no way I m going to spoil it There is magic, mystery, danger, and adventure on a grand scale with a tapestry of characters stories woven together in a way that reminds me of Terry Brooks Shannara series There are so many things that must happen for things to be set right and only a small few who know how necessary those little things are The characters come to life with their struggle to survive, and their flaws that cause them to make mistakes along the way They are so very real to you when you are reading that I already feel like they are friends that I need to check in with and see how they are doing I cannot wait to read the second book My only complaint is that there were moments where I felt like I was missing a little history or background on some of the relationships Dare I suggest a prequel I don t think that the extra detail would be fluid in this book as it would slow down the story line, but there were a few times where my curiosity was dying to know what had happened in the past Other than that I think that the story is great, the characters grow throughout the book, and I was left wanting If you are a fan of science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and a little mystery I highly suggest you read this book. I am already eager for Book 2 after reading this first installment by Gonzalez, completely immersed in her tale of heroics and destiny, and inspiring magic and villains So many twists and turns as new things are revealed, I found myself caring for Edwin and Alden only too easily as they discovered their connection to each other and how it might very well save the kingdom and maybe all of the other kingdoms as well A must read for serious fantasy fans, for those who enjoy YA and adult novels alike, especially if you re a sucker for dragons. I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway.I really enjoyed the storyline in this novel The characters were well developed and very likeable by the reader I found myself cheering for Edwin and Alden The connection these two boys have with each other goes beyond the physical connection of pain that they share They become friends and care for each other s well being I also enjoyed the magic in the book The power of the dragon and what that entails for Edwin s future is highly interesting I cannot wait to read the second book to find out what happens next. This book was ok for me The think to me this book had a very slow beginning so the book took a while to get started for me I thought this book had a good story line once I got further into it I think I was hoping for than what I got from this book but over all not bad I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review This is a brand new author to me and I was so looking forward to reading this book My anticipation was rewarded by strong writing, positive descriptive could have used , and good control of language and telling the story from many points of view. This story revolves around a planet mostly at peace Many wars were fought and now one lands remains without a ruler Evil begins to launch anew by taking this land as it s own There is a Queen who rules Edwin s land who has secret plans of her own And magic A dark magic which took over a land is pushing to take over the entire planet. Our hero is a young lad, Edwin, who is of little means but a father who pushes him, a mother who is secretive and just weird And the story grows into a world of politics, hidden secrets, war, evil, and the dawning a young lad who maybe be able to save his world. There are so many twists and turns that the reader really needs to pay attention and mind the shifts in characters talking and thinking, Personally, I got lost a few times but quickly recovered with a couple of back re reads.I liked this story It tried my reading skills and kept me on my toes I look forward to the next book by this author. THIS REVIEW IS ON THE ORIGINAL CONTENT THE BOOK IS CURRENTLY BEING REVISED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES I WAS ASKED TO PROCEED WITH THE BLOG REVIEW WITH THIS DISCLAIMER.In the book Five Kingdoms of Severi, you have a complete tale written in a high fantasy style Since this is the first book in the series, there is quite a bit going on.World buildingDora does a nice job developing her world There are a few points where there are issues, but the sense of distance traveled, and the settings for her characters do a nice job of helping to convey the size of the world I m guessing, the primary focus is on a kingdom about the size of Alaska or Texas.Mostly, it has one type of landscape, which isn t necessarily a bad thing If the series expands into the other kingdoms, we might see a little wider variety.PacingThis is where the issues being addressed really affected the story Thankfully, the worst offender the homonym reign rein , was consistent throughout This made it a little easier to read past and not get stopped as you tried to guess which term she really meant to use.The pacing is also affected by the book s opening chapters There is a lot of information, but it is presented in such a disjointed way, it can make keeping up with the central plot a bit difficult There really are four sub casts that have to be brought together, and so you wind up bouncing between the different groups as the action is starting to build After a few days to sort through my impressions, I think the pacing was fairly steady, though a bit on the slow side overall This often happens in epic fantasy Especially in the first books of an extensive epic fantasy saga If you had trouble with Terry Brooks Shannara books or Robert Jordan s Wheel of Time, you will probably have difficulty getting into this one after it s smoothed out However, I think if you find either or both enjoyable, then this series will probably appeal to you.I m going to nitpick here, just because horses are almost an obsession It wasn t just the issue of proper terms for the tack that jarred me out of the story in the early chapters It was also the description of the commands The riders are using the reins to both get their mounts moving, and to make them stop If you ve ridden at all, you ll know that it s the legs toes heels that convince a horse to move, and the hands body posture body weight that tells the horse when to turn or stop After multiple times of running across this issue, I began to wonder if the horses were mechanized, not living creatures.Character DevelopmentThis is the weakest part of the entire story The characters are either young adult or fully mature adults There is very little elapsed time in the story, so there is not much personal growth The young adults either do or do not have the skills they need, and the adults come fully primed at their peak abilities. There is one exception to this, but the scenes describing when he learns his skills windup unused later one, so wind up feeling like they are just padding and fluff to bulk up the page count. This is a quest driven story, and so the character development is a secondary consideration However, the tiny bit of personality development that occurs happens so late in the tale that it winds up swamped out by the events coming to a head for the climactic scenes Overall, this is a four star story with a two star presentation I will put up another review after the revisions, because there is a lot of potential, and after contacting Dora and finding out some of the issues mentioned in here are already on the surgical table for repairs, I d be interested to see how this reads once it s smoothed out.The knocked star is due to the lack of character development They aren t cardboard cutouts there are flaws and virtues which make them individuals But, they don t sparkle with life either They feel like an artist s sketch that is being finished, but isn t quite ready to be revealed yet Again, the revisions may correct this problem, so for the time being I ll reserve final judgement. *FREE EBOOK ⇲ The Five Kingdoms of Severi ☠ In a time of peace and treaties, the five kingdoms of Severi lay unguarded and open to the dark hearts of man Terdune, a neighboring land that had been at constant war with Severi, was defeated over twenty years ago All threats were eradicated and its lands left without a ruler Now a new evil reigns in Terdune and slowly makes its way to its adjacent sister When Edwin s village is attacked, he is forced to travel halfway across the second kingdom to the King s Hold Along the way he must learn the true power of the gifts that were bestowed upon him and discover the meaning of the dreaded fate attached to them
