Edited down from a greater encyclopedia, this book gives us some of the essentials brief blurb style summaries of all the stories, a tad about the major and surprisingly minor but well esteemed characters along with some less interesting pages, such as lists of colonels in the stories, or websites for fans Not bad as an all ages friendly introduction with some good trivia, it s not going to set the world alight, but does just enough to justify itself. would find this maybe a bit basic They would definitely not enjoy it as much because this probably wouldn t reveal anything new for them. That being said this was a very good guide to help one enter this magical world that is the Sherlock Holmes fandom It presents the novels, the stories and gives some backstories on the main characters and adaptations.I really appreciate the details and timelines this book provides and I loved seeing the most iconic adaptations of Conan Doyle s detective There were some aspects that were analysed in ways I hadn t noticed before and that was a new perspective to add to the already complicated case of Sherlock. However, I wasn t totally pleases with the way the author chose to organise the ideas I though it was a bit confusing, constantly jumping from one thing to another with no apparent train of thought.Overall, this was a cool, fun and fast book to read, but I still think that, to me, it fell short, in a way It could have been a true Sherlock lexicon had maybe a bitpassion or effort from the author come through to the reader.I absolutely recommend this to someone who just started watching the most recent adaptations, like BBC s Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman or the American Elementary both amazing adaptations, in my opinion, yet not the most recognised by older Sherlock enthusiasts , and never had any other contact with theclassic Sherlock Holmes and wishes to understandof what s behind it The Elementary Sherlock Holmes is a small book of facts aimed at newer additions to the fandom It gives brief summaries of the published books and the short stories within, and also has brief descriptions of the main characters It also has lists of thewell known adaptions for television, cinema and radio, but doesn t I don t think list the main written works that we live off these days, such as by Anthony Horowitz and Laurie R King it has a list of books similar to it itself, but no The The Sherlock Holmes Encyclopaedia which seems to cover pretty much the same thing If you ve already read the original stories in the canon then this book won t really reveal anything new as it s not like there s any new data to be had after all , but it s still a nifty little collection of brief facts if you just wanted to quickly look up a certain crime or criminal if you can t remember whether it was from The Valley of Fear or The Sign of Four This book is quite recent, listing mentions of the BBC s modern version Sherlock , and though it only mentions it once, the American Elementary not sure why it never mentions it again not a fan of the show, perhaps Overall, I think it would have been worthwhile to have a few fans run their eyes over this before printing as mentioned above, it seems to have odd gaps in what it covers and was so close to being fully comprehensive I m being pretty harsh on this book I mean, it s not hurting anyone by existing and it s quite nice in what it s done, but it just feels a bit lacking somehow Overall, the book is presented quite nicely, and I ll probably end up buying a print copy myself and I can t see any reason to rate it anything lower than a four out of five stars but I think I m just a bit sad that it so almost could have been excellent, yet they possibly didn t give as much effort as they could have if they were truly passionate about the subject Especially as wikipedia online and the fan based sites that have their own wiki setup cover all this so easily and also so muchThese books are in danger these days of being overlooked unless they truly excel 2 STARS I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review To a great mind, nothing is little Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes has become such an iconic figure
