Lukyanenkos Welteng nger , whatever it might be in English if it ever gets translated, is a solid piece of modern fantasy, minus a half star because the author can t seem to manage writing any decent female character More on that later.Set in current time Moskow, the story develops around protagonist Kyrill, who returns home one day to find a stranger living in his apartment and neighbours, friends and family forgetting all about his existence Only one of his friends manages to reconstruct kn Lukyanenkos Welteng nger , whatever it might be in English if it ever gets translated, is a solid piece of modern fantasy, minus a half star because the author can t seem to manage writing any decent female character More on that later.Set in current time Moskow, the story develops around protagonist Kyrill, who returns home one day to find a stranger living in his apartment and neighbours, friends and family forgetting all about his existence Only one of his friends manages to reconstruct knowing him by writing himself notes about Kyrill.When Kyrill receives anonymous orders to come to a deserted tower near a moscow station, and finds a door that leads to a completly different world, the story starts developingWith fast paced writing and finally a good German translation, unlike Nightwatch s and a style ranging between a bit too sloppy and superb, Lukyanenko creates a credible setting with a protagonist, whose most moves the reader can well relate to comedy and serious elements go well together as the secret of the different worlds are slowly revealed It s especially the crediblity of the worlds and their system that totally drew me into the book, despite the fact there could ve been a lotplot within the worlds,conflict andof other characters before solving the story.While these are barely minor points of critique, there s one major flaw about the story, which kept annoying me Lukyanenko is plain unable to write any credible female character There s a wide range of, fortunately not too important, females in the story, but all of them are united by the fact that they are either a male s dream one night stand nymphomanic, hot, and totally set on the protagonist or a male s nightmare either masculine or plain ugly but the latter ones want sex with the protagonist, too This is such a male thinking that it s not even sexist, it s just ridiculous But it did spoil certain chapters of the book, like the one with Wassilissa, who I thought had a lot of potential for an awesome character.So in the end this is only 4 stars, but solid ones Very recommended read The amazing thing about Sergei Lukyanenko s books is that he writes sci fi without going into the technological detail that is usually such a natural component of sci fi novels What I love about his novels and it was particularly prominent in this book is that they re so filled with what I d call the Russian spirit and portray the life in the country and all its little quirks with that typical Russian cynicism.While isn t Lukyanenko s best book out of those that I ve read so far, The amazing thing about Sergei Lukyanenko s books is that he writes sci fi without going into the technological detail that is usually such a natural component of sci fi novels What I love about his novels and it was particularly prominent in this book is that they re so filled with what I d call the Russian spirit and portray the life in the country and all its little quirks with that typical Russian cynicism.While isn t Lukyanenko s best book out of those that I ve read so far, it still was an action packed, smartly written page turner with well sculpted characters and an interesting plot idea The main character, Kirill Maximov literally disappears from reality, his friends and family forget all about him, his personal documents are gone all that so that he can step into the position of a customs inspector between worlds The ending is kind of open, which probably means that there s going to be a sequel The story is well written and I really like the storyline, so normally this would have gotten four stars But the anti gay remarks and the latent sexism really are annoying and make the book a lot less enjoyable than it could be otherwise. ,. ,, 10 15.
